>> Welcome to the Re-Written version of Sweeney Todd - the award-winning Tim Burton film written into story form - a definite place for any Sweeney Addict to read the story of the legend
The Story of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street is an old English legend, but has grown in fame worldwide, with the story of the demon barber spreading from Australia to America in the release of the Tim Burton's 2007 horror/musical, which won 3 Golden Globe pieces this year including 'Best Actor; Johnny Depp'.
The real, true story of Todd is not well known, having been written over so many times in both musical and films alike. Both versions of the film, including the older PG-rated 1989 edition and the newer 18-rated (R) 2007 edition play around the plot, as did the musical, broadcast by Stephen Sondheim in 1979.
However...
As I'm a very kind and dedicated person *cough, cough, splutter* I have tracked down the real story of Sweeney Todd, as recorded by historians at the time.
(ALL INFORMATION FROM RELIABLE SOURCES (i.e. censuses, etc))
Sweeney Todd - the first and only child of Elizabeth and Samuel Todd, born 16th October 1756 at 55 Brick Lane, London. Both his parents worked within the silk trade.
In February 1770 he was arrested on charge of stealing at only 14, but was given a prison sentence and not a death sentence according to his age. Whilst in prison, he met another man named Elmer Plummer - who was in turn serving 10 years for fraud - and was taught tricks of the barber's trade whilst serving time in jail.
On his release in 1775, Sweeney made to set up his own shop at the age of 19, and bought 186 Fleet Street, shop at the side of the alleyway then called 'Hen and Chicken Lane'.
Whether it was Sweeney or not, the news that hit the headlines on 14th April 1785 was something horrific. Whilst upon Fleet Street, a man had been seen to be arguing with a man dressed in the attire of a barber. The victim's throat had been slashed with a knife of some sort - and many rumoured it to be a 'cut-throat razor' that had abetted the murderer in his crime.
Whilst there, Todd met with Mrs. Lovett, who owned a Pie Shop in the Bell Yard (a small street leading off Fleet Street). It is assumed that they were lovers. Todd found the cellar passageways underneath the shops connecting his own shop with St. Dunstan's Church, and the Meat Pie Emporium of his mistress.
The passage to St. Dunstan's was a useful one - it is said that a hidden crypt was used to conceal less edible parts of the victims, along with their clothes (though this is not confirmed).
The story came to an abrupt end in 1802 - and ended, for Sweeney, on the end of a rope. Sweeney Todd was tried and hung on 25th January, and Mrs Lovett arrested on suspicion of helping a murderer to kill. However, she was found dead in her prison cell just days after Todd's execution. Sweeney Todd was rumoured to have killed and robbed over 150 of his customers, making him the most-feared serial killer of London's history beside Jack the Ripper.
Don't believe me?
Evidence to show that Sweeney Todd existed...
1) When 186 Fleet Street was demolished in the widening of the road (early 1800's)underground cellars were found leading to certain shops in the Bell Yard.
2) The article published in 1785 'A Cut-Throat Barber' has been documented and recorded in a British News database.
3) Human remains were found underneath certain parts of Fleet Street - along with the hats and coats of victims who died.
---------------------------------
Murder and gore mingled with heartbreak and emotion is what made Sweeney Todd the most theatrical musical to date. Adapted by author Christopher Bond, the story became a book - and so developed into a musical, a film and so forth.
Fleet Street really is a place in London - and was up until recently the home of journalism and publication across Britain. It is in the middle of London, and it is true that a Mr. Todd did indeed take up residence on Fleet Street during the Victorian period. There is still a barber's shop on the street, which has gained popularity rapidly after the release of the 2007 film.
This is why I have chosen to re-write it - for loving the story so much, and wanting to write my own version of the classic tale that has become British Legend.
